About First Lutheran Church
For 155+ years, First Lutheran Church has been a cornerstone of faith and community in Newton, Iowa. Established in 1868, our church has grown and evolved to meet the needs of our congregation and community. As a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), we are committed to sharing Christ’s love and serving others.

Partnership with UCC
In 2022, following a lengthy pulpit vacancy, First Lutheran Church explored non-traditional ways to fill the vacancy. What transpired was a partnership with a non-Lutheran church to provide a part-time pastor for each.
Pastor Kurt Hoover serves both First Lutheran and the Congregational United Church of Christ, across the alley. Both congregations maintain their own faith traditions and worship spaces, while both contributing to the financial support of a full time pastor.
